A bulk food buying group runs somewhat like a food co-op, but with not as formal. Sometimes known as bulk buyers clubs, buyers groups, or as we call it, a bulk food buying group, we're simply a small group of friends, family and neighbours who want to enjoy affordable, earth-friendly, nutrient-dense whole food. So we've combined our buying power to access cheaper wholesale prices and bulk quantities.
We're Daniel and Melody (and latest addition, Elliott). We have a love for healthy food and great bargains. Early in 2014, we found a supplier who is happy to sell to us organic and natural food products in bulk, at wholesale prices. Loving the idea of saving money but not needing five kilograms of everything all for ourselves, we decided to get some family and friends together so that we can put in a bulk order, and then divide the products amongst ourselves. That worked beautifully and so we decided to share the savings with the local community and so, Purely Bulk Foods was born!
Being a small food buying group, we're home-based in Wahroonga (not far from the Sydney Adventist Hospital). But we have members from as far as Manly and even Cooma (thanks mum!)!
Typically, orders open in the first week of every other month and close a week later. We will collate the orders and organise for the products to be picked up from our place, usually towards the end of the month.
No. Membership to our food buying group is FREE. To make sure you receive a reminder that orders are open, you can sign up to our mailing list below.
No. You are welcome to order different items and different quantities in different months. You don't even have to order every month.
Yes! Most of our products are certified organic (and deliciously pesticide-free!) but some products do have non-organic options. So if the word organic is not in the product description, then the product is as stated and not organic or biodynamic.
More often than not, yes. If it's on our supplier's website, we can get it for you at wholesale price. Drop us an email with your product request and we'll see if we can source it for you and how much it will cost.
After collating everybody's orders, we will email you an invoice, with any changes if any items are not available (e.g.: we didn't meet minimum order quantity, or they don't have any of the item in stock). Payment can be made via direct deposit (our preferred method so as to avoid the hassle of finding change), but you can pay cash on pick-up.
Yes, we do! Just let us know you would like to pay by credit card and we can get that organised for you. There is a 2.25% surcharge.
The $3.00 supplier transport charge you'll find included in your invoice is to cover transport delivery costs our supplier charges us for our bulk order. This assists in keeping overall product prices low for everyone.
We will send you an email to let you know your order is ready for pick-up. All you have to do is arrange a day and time with us.
Yes. We are happy to deliver your order to you for an extra fee ($6.00 within a 10-kilometre distance from Wahroonga, pro-rated further distances).
Yes. When we email you to let you know your order is ready for pick-up, we will also let you know if you need to bring any empty containers. Besides saving money by buying in bulk, one of our motivations for organising this initiative comes from the potential of reducing packaging and therefore reducing waste and what goes into landfill, which is kinder to the environment.
Therefore, in order to split the order up from the bulk quantities into the individual quantities for each order (eg: 5kg bag of cashews into 1kg lots), we may need you to bring in your own reusable containers such as old glass jars, Tupperware or even zip-lock bags (they can be reused!).
